As their population continues to age and fertility rate declines, China has now announced that each couple is permitted to have three children.
This is a major policy shift after their controversial one-child policy, which was brought in to reign the rising population growth. However, in 2016, China abolished the policy and gave a two-children limit to Chinese couples.
China took this decision as early this month, their census showed that the population grew at its slowest rate during the last decade since 1950s. The average fertility rate stands presently at 1.3 children per women, which is even less than the replacement rate.
China is presently the most populous nation in the world. India is expected to surpass it by 2027 according to a UN report published in 2019.
